A former middle school teacher in Maryland has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for repeatedly sexually abusing her underage student, but the judge has suspended a large portion of the sentence, saying that the teacher will only have to serve one year in prison. According to information obtained from the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office and District Court of Maryland documents, Melissa Marie Curtis (32) had pleaded guilty to a third-degree sex crime. The Montgomery County Police Department began investigating the case in October 2023 after an 8th-grade student at Montgomery Wills Middle School complained that the teacher had sexually abused her.
According to the investigators’ report, the teacher was 22 years old and the student was 14 years old at the time of the crime. Montgomery County Circuit Court Judge Theresa Chernosky suspended most of the sentence and said the teacher will serve 12 months in jail. After that, she will be supervised for five years. Upon release, Curtis will be registered as a sex offender and will not be allowed to have unsupervised contact with minors other than her own children.
