First, those who left their homeland for the sake of employment and went to foreign lands, now for reasons other than employment, have left Punjab and crossed the seven seas. Another desolation has been created by the swamp of drugs. In the villages and cities, where once the youth used to be free from household chores and insisted on increasing their arm strength, now in the desolate places they are facing death due to drugs like drug injections, chitta, heroin, pills etc. They are preparing to go. Due to these drugs, homes are being ruined; Sathar is being laid every day in villages and houses. Household necessities are being offered to fulfill their addictions and mothers and sisters are suffering.
During the two tenures of the Akali-BJP government from 2007 to 2017, its leaders, ministers and other big and small leaders have been accused of dealing in drugs. A good example of this is the cases of honor killings registered against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo Arvind Kejriwal due to the allegations leveled against him. Before the 2017 Punjab Assembly elections, Captain Amarinder Singh, who took over the reins of the elections, took a gutka in hand and vowed that he would rid Punjab of the scourge of drugs within four weeks. He ruled Punjab for a little less than five years and only ruled. Beyond this, no characteristic work is seen. Charanjit Singh Channi’s five-month rule is not to be talked about. Before the 2022 elections, Bhagwant Mann along with AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal talked about quality reforms in health and education as well as cleaning up drugs from Punjab. The people of Punjab were hopeful and AAP won with a huge majority with 92 seats, but it is a pity that neither there was any quality improvement in health, education nor there was any stop to the drug business.
