Suicide is becoming an epidemic. According to a report on August 28, 2024, based on NCRB (National Crime Records Bureau) data, 54 percent of youth suicides are attributed to health problems, 36 percent to negative family issues, 23 percent to educational problems and 20 percent are social and lifestyle factors. However, 22 percent commit suicide due to violence, 9.1 percent due to economic crisis and 9 percent due to emotional relationships. Physical and sexual abuse, early motherhood, domestic violence, gender discrimination and many more are the reasons why young girls commit suicide.
Increasing suicides among students are troubling the entire society. In the annual report released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) dated 3 December 2023, it is stated that 1,70,924 suicides have been recorded in India in the year 2022. This number is 4.2 percent more than 2021 and 27 percent more than 2018. This figure is 12.4 per one lakh, which is one of the highest suicide rates recorded in India every year.
When students come to the new environment of coaching centers, away from their families, many things happen to them, which they never thought about before. Students from financially weaker sections have more responsibility to take care of their family by becoming something as soon as possible, but the possibility of not getting a job or placement is also quite high. In this way, coaching centers are also responsible for the suicide of students, who show high vegetable gardens to students at the time of admission.

Everyone is saddened by the increasing rate of student suicides in the city of Kota in Rajasthan, where NEET, JEE And young students preparing for other competitive exams are constantly sacrificing their lives. Isn’t it the responsibility of the government to prevent such incidents from happening?
In the case of students committing suicide, psychiatrists are of the opinion that the reason for increasing suicide among students is the burden of studies on students beyond their capacity and the race to get maximum marks in exams. A small farmer who owns less than 5 acres of land is constantly in debt. Now the middle class farmer is also in the grip of debt. Overall, 92 percent of the country’s farmers are small and middle class farmers. These include cultivators, tenants. Due to the absence of a coin-operated ‘agricultural policy’ in the country, these farmers remain stuck in trouble. They become victims of economic hardships. According to a 2022 report, 11,290 people in the agricultural sector, including 5,270 farmers and 6,083 farm workers, committed suicide. This was 6.6 percent of the total suicides in the country. The main reasons are debt, lack of monsoon, crop failure etc. But the worrying thing is that the rate of farmer-labourer suicides is increasing every year.
