The ‘War on Drugs’ campaign launched by the Punjab government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann to completely eradicate the network of drug smugglers from the state is yielding positive results and the common people are feeling great relief with this initiative. The Punjab government has intensified the ‘War on Drugs’ campaign under which illegal structures owned by drug smugglers were demolished in several districts today. These operations carried out today include demolition of illegal structures related to drug smugglers in Nawanshahr and Sunam Udham Singh Wala under the supervision of district police officers.
In Kalran Mohalla of Nawanshahr, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar Police, in collaboration with the local civil administration, demolished illegal structures of three families involved in drug smuggling. SSP Dr. Mehtab Singh said that this action has been taken against women named Biro, Shindo and Santosh, against whom several cases have been registered collectively, out of which 14 cases have been registered against one family alone. He said that this action to demolish illegal constructions was taken on the request of the Municipal Council and the Municipal Council needed police assistance to demolish these illegal constructions. The local residents were very upset with these drug smugglers and are now welcoming this action of the Punjab Government. He further said that the people have supported these efforts being made by the Punjab Government to eradicate drugs from the state. Along with this, a joint team of the District Administration and Police Department in Sunam Udham Singh Wala under the supervision of SSP Sartaj Singh Chahal demolished the illegal construction related to drug smuggler Budh Singh alias Budhu near the main gate of the grain market. The person was illegally occupying the land belonging to Market Committee Sunam and was allegedly running a house and shop for drug activities. He further said that several cases have been registered against him under the NDPS Act and the Excise Act. Both the SSPs have issued stern warnings to drug peddlers in their areas, saying that either the drug peddlers voluntarily give up drug trafficking or be ready to face serious consequences. They appealed to the public to provide information about drug-related activities and assured immediate strict action against the accused involved in these illegal activities. Both the police officers reiterated that such operations against drug trafficking networks and illegal constructions will continue as part of the government’s commitment to make Punjab drug-free.
