The Punjab and Haryana High Court has sought the assistance of the Registrar General of the Gauhati High Court in serving notice to Amritpal Singh. Hearing a petition challenging the election of Amritpal Singh, the High Court has requested the Registrar General of the Gauhati High Court to assist in serving notice to Amritpal Singh. Amritpal Singh is currently lodged in Dibrugarh Jail. Vikramjit Singh, an independent candidate from the Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha seat, had challenged Amritpal Singh’s election in the High Court in June 2024. The petition has alleged that Amritpal Singh sought votes by using religious identity, which amounts to corrupt practice under the Representation of the People Act.
The petitioner says that since Amritpal Singh was in jail, his family and team campaigned at various religious places, gurdwaras and religious Nagar Kirtans and his election manifesto was also released from the gurdwara. The petition also alleged that during the election campaign, campaign material was circulated on the internet media without permission, the model code of conduct was violated and the nomination papers were also incomplete. According to the petition, due to being detained under NSA, special permission was required to file nominations in the elections, which was not obtained from the competent authorities.
The petitioner claims that the Returning Officer did not properly examine the documents and did not give any explanation on the objections raised by the opposition candidates. Apart from this, he has also not given full details of the expenditure incurred during the elections. He has not given any details of the daily meetings held for the election campaign, vehicles and election materials. The source of the expenditure incurred for the election campaign has also not been disclosed. The petitioner has requested the court to declare the election of Amritpal Singh as illegal and to set it aside. The court said that the petitioner will have to send the information through registered post so that the Registrar General of the Gauhati High Court can get the facility to give notice. The next hearing of the matter will be on April 8, 2025.
