Minnesota legislator and House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hartman and her husband, Mark Hartman, were shot and killed in their home in Brooklyn Park. State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yette, were shot and seriously injured in their home in Champlain. The gunman shot Hoffman and his wife multiple times, but they survived and are currently being treated in a hospital. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said the attack appeared to be politically motivated. He said the attack was premeditated. Authorities say the gunman, a white man, entered the home posing as a law enforcement officer and fired shots before fleeing. Brooklyn Park Police Chief Mark Bruley said that when officers arrived at Hartman’s home, a police car was parked outside with its emergency lights on. A man in a police uniform came out of the house and fired shots at the police officers who arrived at the scene and fled. Burley said that hundreds of police officers are working to arrest the suspect and that he will be captured soon. The police chief said that Hartman was a wonderful public servant and his services will not be forgotten. Law enforcement officials have identified the suspect as Vance Luther Boelter (57). According to officials, the suspect was last seen in the Twin Cities area. Police say that the suspect is armed and may prove to be a threat to others. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has said that this is a very sad incident and it appears that the members of the legislature have been targeted. He said that the culprit is being sought and will not be spared.
