Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami, President of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, has written a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner of Punjab asking him to hold the Municipal Corporation and Municipal Council elections in January 2025. The letter states that the second fortnight of December holds great significance in Sikh history, because the martyrdom of the four sons of the tenth Guru, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, Mata Gujar Kaur Ji and beloved Sikhs took place during these days. He said that the Sikh community goes through emotional and dispassionate periods during these days and refrains from organizing any kind of joyful events in honor of its martyrs. The Sangat celebrates these days with devotion, remembering the unparalleled martyrdom of the sons. He said that along with this, the Parkash Purab of the universal donor Sri Gobind Singh Ji is also coming on January 6, 2025, which is celebrated by the Sikh community all over the world according to Khalsa traditions.
Advocate Dhami said that it would not be appropriate for the Punjab government to hold elections to municipal corporations and municipal councils during these days. He said that the Sikh community is approaching the Shiromani Committee on a large scale to fix the dates of these elections keeping in mind the Shaheedi Fortnight and the Parkash Purb of the tenth Guru. In view of this, a letter has been written to the Chief Electoral Officer of Punjab, appealing that keeping in mind these days of Sikh history and the demands of the community, the dates for local elections to municipal corporations and municipal councils should be fixed in January 2025 itself.
