A major anti-drug operation was conducted by the police in Guru Ki Wadali, an area under Chheharta police station in Amritsar. During this operation, Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar himself reached the spot and supervised the operation.
Talking to the media on this occasion, he said that the Commissionerate Police Amritsar has achieved great successes under the war against drugs campaign. The Police Commissioner said that about 300 kg of heroin has been recovered during the last one year. Apart from this, 37 kg of opium, 8 kg of methamphetamine (ice), 9 kg of ganja, charas and other synthetic drugs have also been recovered. He said that to break the chain of drug smuggling, the police has reached factories in other states and the network of drug peddlers has been destroyed.CP Bhullar said that a total of 2897 drug smugglers have been arrested in the last one year. Along with this, 4235 drug addicts have been admitted to de-addiction centers, while 3177 people have been registered for treatment through OAT centers. He said that the aim of the police is not only to make arrests, but also to bring those who want to quit drugs back into the mainstream. Talking about the Guru Ki Wadali area, the Police Commissioner said that this area was quite infamous for drugs in the past, but today it is clear from the feedback of the people that the police campaign has been very effective. Now the availability and prevalence of drugs in the area has reduced considerably and the back of drug smugglers has been broken.
