The US state of Indiana has revoked the licenses of all illegally working Punjabi drivers. The new Indiana law has resulted in the loss of jobs for 1,790 drivers, most of whom are from Punjab and Haryana. Discussions are now underway to implement this law across the US. If implemented across the US, the licenses of 1.5 lakh drivers working on work permits from Punjab and Haryana could be revoked.
The Indiana licensing authority said that this decision was taken after several accidents involving Indian drivers. After the accidents, inquiries revealed that the drivers of Punjab-Haryana origin neither knew how to read road signs in English nor could they speak English.
