The Punjab government has decided not to extend the detention of seven associates of Lok Sabha member and pro-Khalistani leader Amritpal Singh, who are in jail under the National Security Act (NSA). As a result, they will be brought back from Dibrugarh jail in Assam, a senior Punjab Police official confirmed today.
It is worth noting that the seven persons were arrested in connection with the 2023 Ajnala police station attack and were lodged in Dibrugarh jail for the last two years. Those being shifted back to Punjab include Basant Singh, Bhagwant Singh Bajekhana, Gurmeet Singh Bookanwala, Sarabjit Kalsi, Ranjit Kalsi, Gurinder Pal Singh Guri Aujla, Harjit Singh (alias Chacha) and Kulwant Singh.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Border Range Satinder Singh said, “Currently, we are registering the arrests of these seven persons in connection with the Ajnala case and bringing them back to Punjab. Further action will be decided after their remand.”
