Britain’s Conservative Party on Saturday elected Kemi Badenoch as its new leader. Badenoch defeated her rival member Robert Jenrick by the votes of about one lakh party members. Along with being the party chief, Badenoch will now also be the leader of the opposition in the British Parliament, who will replace (former Prime Minister) Rishi Sunak. The Conservative Party had to face defeat from the Labor Party in the general elections held this year. The Labor Party has come to power after 14 years. The Conservative Party under Sunak’s leadership suffered a major defeat in this year’s general election. The Conservative Party lost more than 200 seats in an election for the first time since 1832, reducing its total number of members to 121.
The biggest challenge for Badenoch is to improve the image of the party
She is the first black woman leader to be made the head of the Conservative Party. As the new leader, Badenoch’s biggest challenge is to improve the image of the Conservative Party. She will also have to give a strong response to the policies of Labour Party Prime Minister Keir Starmer, especially on important issues like economy and immigration. She will also face the challenge of bringing the Conservative Party to power in the 2029 general election.
Badenoch (44 years old), a strong supporter of Brexit, is known for her tough stand on immigration and transgender people’s officials. She has been the country’s Minister of Women and Equality. The process of this internal election of the party lasted for months. Initially there were six candidates in it. Later this number was reduced to two. Then Badenoch was elected as the party leader.
