The Vigilance Bureau’s arrest of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Raman Arora from Jalandhar (Central) has not only created a stir within the ruling party but also given the opposition an opportunity to attack the government. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is calling it part of the fight against corruption, while the opposition is calling it a political ploy and drama. Meanwhile, a media report claiming that Arora wanted to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and had attended a function of the Sangh Parivar has further heated up the matter.
The Vigilance claims that Arora is facing serious charges of issuing notices to people through the Jalandhar Municipal Corporation and taking money and getting the notices dismissed in return. The case is related to a former Assistant Town Planner (ATP), who has already been arrested.
According to sources, Arora misused his powers and conspired with the municipal corporation officials and illegally collected money from the people. The Vigilance also detained Arora’s personal assistant and raided the house of his relative Raju Madan in Basti Guja, although the house was found locked. On May 24, Arora was produced in court, where the Vigilance sought a 10-day remand, but the court granted a 5-day remand. Meanwhile, news of Arora’s deteriorating health also came to light, due to which he was taken to the civil hospital. An ultrasound revealed gallstones, but after he was discharged after being given medicines, the Vigilance took him back.
According to sources, the Vigilance has started investigating Arora’s bank accounts, properties and municipal corporation records, but his statement has not been confirmed yet.
How much gold and money was found in the house?
Vigilance raided Arora’s house and related places, but so far no official information has come out about the recovery of gold, cash or other valuables. Sources say that some documents and electronic devices have been seized during the search, which are being investigated.
Why did the government first withdraw the security and give him a chance to recover?
Before Raman Arora’s arrest, the government had withdrawn his security and the government vehicle was also withdrawn. There is talk in political circles that this step was taken to warn Arora so that he could curb his activities. However, the question arises that if the government had a suspicion of Arora’s corruption, why was strict action not taken earlier?
According to sources, some leaders living close to Arora had informed the party high command about his activities. After this, the decision to withdraw the security was taken. Some political experts believe that by giving Arora a chance to recover, the government wanted to show that it is not lenient even with its own people. However, after Arora’s arrest, it became clear that the government’s zero tolerance policy was not just sloganeering.
How many ministers and politicians have been taken action against?
Since the AAP government came to power, several major actions have been taken against corruption. During the government’s rule, vigilance cases were registered against five former Congress ministers – Bharat Bhushan Ashu, Sundar Sham Arora, Sadhu Singh Dharamsot, Manpreet Singh Badal and OP Soni. Most of them are out on bail. Apart from this, action was also taken against one of AAP’s own ministers, Vijay Singla, who was removed from the cabinet. Talking about MLAs, the vigilance also tightened its grip on Kushaldeep Singh Dhillon, Madan Lal Jalalpur, Satkar Kaur Gehri and Amit Rattan. Between January 1, 2022 and April 30, 2025, the Vigilance punished 9 gazetted officers, 98 petty officers and 52 private individuals. These figures show that the AAP government has taken its campaign against corruption seriously, even if its own people are involved in it.
Is Raman Arora’s political future over?
After the arrest of Raman Arora, his political future seems to be in danger. His hold in Jalandhar (Central) constituency was quite strong, but now his close leaders and workers have distanced themselves. There is talk in political circles that the AAP party will not give Arora a ticket in the 2027 assembly elections. There is speculation that former mayor Jagdish Raja will replace him, who is considered an honest and clean personality. After Arora’s arrest, the number of his supporters has started decreasing, and no big leader or worker has reached the vigilance office to meet him. Earlier, work was done in the constituency on Arora’s behest, but now even local councilors have distanced themselves from him.
What is the reaction of political parties?
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann described Arora’s arrest as part of the war against corruption. He said in a message, “For our government, everyone is equal, be it a politician or an officer. Mann’s statement shows that the party is sticking to its zero tolerance policy.
Former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi termed the action as a political ploy and demanded that the investigation of the matter be handed over to the CBI. Former Congress president Shamsher Singh Dullo also accused the government of hiding failures.
Senior Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia said, “After the arrests, charge sheets are not filed, this proves the government’s charade.” He accused the government of targeting political opponents.
