George Garner, the mayor of McAllen, South Carolina, has been killed in a car accident. According to reports, sheriff’s office officers were following him when the accident occurred. The South Carolina Highway Patrol confirmed the accident to public radio and the state newspaper, saying that the accident occurred around 2:40 p.m. yesterday in Mechanicsville, South Carolina, a town in Darlington County, when the mayor’s car collided with a Volvo tractor-trailer. He was the only person in the car. Garner was taken to a nearby hospital where he died. The driver of the tractor-trailer was also injured in the accident and remains hospitalized. Garner was recently re-elected mayor of McAllen, a town of about 1,900 in Marlboro County.
